The Brashear
Association was founded in 1917 to honor the renowned, self-taught scientist
John A. Brashear and celebrate his humanitarianism. Working in the settlement
house tradition, the Association opened several neighborhood houses until
its services were consolidated in one multi-purpose center, the Brashear
Center at 2005 Sarah Street, in 1955. A decade later, the Henry Kaufmann
Neighborhood House was constructed in Arlington to serve as an outreach
site. Brashear has also maintained outreach offices in the public housing
communities of Arlington Heights and St. Clair Village. Our Arlington
Heights offices was closed in 1999, pending demolition of that section
of the community.
The current
service area of the Association consists of the South Pittsburgh communities
of Arlington, Arlington Heights, Mt. Oliver, St. Clair Village and South
Side. Other communities are served by specific programs, including Allentown,
Bon Air, Carrick, Knoxville and Dormont.
Because of
the energy and vision of those with whom we work, Brashear has been able
to accomplish much in its history. Brashear was instrumental in the development
of community mental health services, the establishment of grassroots organizations
such as community and tenant councils and the organization of coalitions
such as the South Side Planning Forum. We provide innovative community
education opportunities for adults and children. We provide human services
for diverse populations such as senior citizens, low-income families and
stroke survivors. We also offer technical assistance to grassroots organizations
and other service providers.
